Why I choose to meditate daily (or at least I try to do so).
Most of us have been taught that in order to be successful in life we need to struggle, to fight, to focus, to concentrate. The trouble with this approach is that we end up constantly running after something or away from something. Once I arrived in Dubai last May for the first time in my life I really understood what the state of being connected means and why it is a crucial part of that self-awareness that helps you turn knowledge into action. Changing your daily routine completely and moving into a totally different environment have forced me to focus on my inner self, listen to my kinder mind and trusting my gut. In the end, the ability to consider what you might want is a huge gift. Being able to apply rational thought to our feelings and emotions – to consider how we really feel, deep down, not just on the surface – is what makes us human.
What I have personally learned during the journey is that meditation has to be made simple, ordinary, thus becoming the natural component of a contemporary lifestyle… Or it will never work. Sitting quietly for 30 minutes can be the hardest task… But as we acquire the knack (it took me around 21 days of daily practise), meditation can be our companion wherever we are – at work, at play, at rest. And above all, you can never get wrong if you listen to your inner voice. Practise today and feel the result immediately!
My daily meditation (Sahaj Marg Heartfulness Meditation)
Sit comfortably and close your eyes very softly. Think that Divine Light is already present within your heart. Rather than trying to visualize it, simply tune in to your heart and be open to any experience you may have. Do this for 30 minutes. If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your heart.
